ARTIST STATEMENT
October 2009

I collect, I select - words, images, objects, willow.
I spend a lot of time outdoors in Montana. Many of my images and themes stem from that experience. Boats, rivers and ladders, stairways and houses, all part of my personal iconography, stem in part from this special place. I am continually exploring the process of taking these familiar images, juxtaposing them against each other and understanding the emotional response and content that is created. The themes that I choose are ones that invite the viewer to come closer, allowing an insight into my coded visual events.

Willow:  A return in part to the process I used in my earlier installation pieces. No nails, no glue, no wire.  The willow is bent, formed, dried, existing as a solid sculpture, in part, dictated by their own pressure and resistance to each other. The willow constructions begin with a trek along the riverbanks or roadways, searching out willows that will easily bend and peel. From that point on the process is improvisational. As I rely on how the willow responds the sculpture begins to form.  A physical gesture is created.  It is a process of bending, shaping, drying, tightening - a rhythmic, repetitive dance.
