Pearblossom Highway
Markers
State Highway 18 CA
Palmdale to Victorville
2000 - 2020
For over 20 years, I have been driving the Pearblossom Highway on my annual
pilgrimage from Los Angeles to Montana.
In 2000 I began photographing the tires that dotted the road's shoulder.
Painted, piled, half buried, wire added, reflectors, tape...
Tires as markers, defining how to find home.
I continued to photograph new markers yearly, documenting how they were
modified by time or by their makers.
Then they began to disappear.
Road improvements. More houses built. Cleaning up the landscape.
Few, if any remain today.
